What is Ayahuasca? Ayahuasca is an ancient brew that originated in the Amazon Basin more than 10,000 years ago. Some sources claim the origins of Ayahuasca are much older. It is a synergy of the Banisteriopsis caapi (Ayahuasca vine) and the Psychotria viridis (Chacruna) leaf, with admixture ingredients such as mapacho tobacco, various tree barks and the Sanango root. The Ayahuasca brew has a wide variety of admixtures depending on the Shaman’s knowledge and experience.
The mature Ayahuasca vines are pounded and cooked with Chacruna and other admixtures over a very hot fire for approximately 8-12 hours in which much care and intention is focused upon the Medicine. The Vine and the Leaf must have one another to become the Ayahuasca Medicine.
The Ayahuasca vine’s active alkaloids include harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine, all of which are MAOI inhibitors. These alkaloids allow the DMT in the Chacruna to be orally active and to induce the visionary properties of the Medicine. One would experience no affects from the Chacruna if it was taken without the vine.
Ayahuasca medicine has been cooked for ages by indigenous groups in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil. The tradition was taken up by Mestizos in the last century, and in the last decade, it has gone global. She has declared her availability to all persons throughout the globe, though its legality varies around the world. It’s legal in Peru, so guests have nothing to worry about in the way of legal repercussions.
The finished product is the physical manifestation of the Spirit of Ayahuasca. It is a vehicle by which she enters the human body to purge and heal with the guidance and presence of the Shaman. She works in the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental realms of the human body. We choose to take Ayahuasca for many reasons: to heal physical, emotional, spiritual and mental toxins that have accumulated over our lifetimes.
Ayahuasca works idiosyncratically by deciding each person’s healing process individually, independently of other people in the group. We all are presented with what we need in each ceremony, and it is usually very different than the other participants’ experiences. As humans, we are a tangled energetic and physical mess. The Mother Vine will come in and start cleaning house, directed by the icaros of the Shaman and the presence of benevolent doctor spirits.
It can be a very unpleasant and painful process resulting in a deep cleansing that can’t be achieved through western medical approaches. The Vine’s presence sometimes causes vomiting, defecating, physical shaking, cold and hot sweats, laughing, and crying as she moves through the body, purging what needs to be expelled. She knows when issues and blocks are ready to be released and in what order.
The Chacruna opens the third eye and the visionary spirit world will be opened up to the participant when deemed appropriate by the Medicine. She is capable of producing beautiful celestial visions, or dark, scary underworld experiences, depending on what is needed at the time. It is very important to trust in the whole process, for she is ultimately here to heal and liberate us from our baggage, not to hurt or damage us. Guests will always have trusted attendants, apprentices and the Shaman who will help with difficult periods in the healing process before, during and after each Ayahuasca ceremony.
Fear, anger, hatred of others and oneself, sadness, despair, heartbreak and whatever other emotional baggage a person has within can be re-experienced during the Ayahuasca ceremony as the Medicine brings negative emotions to the surface to be released. An essential part of the healing process is to experience them again to truly be able to release them, to make room for the True Self to emerge in all its light and divinity. It is a cathartic process that results in abundance, acceptance, forgiveness, freedom, joy, and love.
Physically, Ayahuasca will purge the toxins accumulated from drug and alcohol abuse, toxic food and environments, replenish the serotonin and dopamine in our brains, hone the senses, and cleanse the endocrine gland system, nervous systems, blood, organs and skin. As a result, our capacity to feel the Spirit of Ayahuasca and the realms beyond this one will be deeply enhanced, connecting us with our True Selves and the Source of All in the Now.
This process requires much preparation in advance, both dietary and spiritual. To come to the Peruvian Amazon, to be totally isolated from the chatter and distractions of daily life, and to delve deep within the Self, to go through all of this requires one to ask themselves: am I truly ready for this? That is a question that can be answered by emailing us and starting the evaluation process. Many are energetically drawn to the Ayahuasca Medicine with open hands, heart, mind, and Spirit. Others have more questions and doubts about their preparedness. All these questions will be addressed fully and honestly.
